THE NAIRNSHIRE IN A HURRICANE. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, December 15. The Nairnshire, which arrived hero on Saturday afternoon from Liverpool, experienced a severe hurricane on November 20, a week after leaving Capetown.
Huge seas broke on board and flooded a great part of the ship, especially the steerage quarters. There were 49 passengers in the steerage, and these lost most of their effects. The women and children wore moved to the saloon. Considerable damage was done to the vessel’s fittings. Temporary repairs were effected at sea. A seaman named Stuart had his | thigh broken, ancPthe carpenter was severely bruised by a falling derrick. THE DOMINION’S PROSPECTS. Wellington, December 14. The Hon. James Allen, interviewed before his departure yesterday, said that the bad months of the financial year were now over. December was usuafly'tho best revenue -month of-the-►year, and with a fortunate season, the remaining four months will give a larger revenue than the corresponding period of last year. The Post Office Savings Bank funds were now in a much better position than they were for the past three or four months, and if revenue prospects are realised, they should be able to meet commitments, for loans to local bodies without having recourse to the London market.
CARGO BROACHING. Dunedin, December 15. Arthur Wilks, a fireman on the liner Paparoa, was arrested on Saturday afternoon for alleged cargo broaching. A roll of high-class waterproof tweed, valued at £lO, was found in accused’s possession. It is reported that the case containing the tweed was broken open and material to the value of about £SO is said to bo missing.
