DOMINION NEWS.

(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, December 12

The fact that education hoard scholarships cannot be hold at Catholic colleges was referred to by Bishop Grimes in an address at the presentation of prizes this afternoon. His Lordship said that Catholic children were generally loyal to their alma mater, yet though they strove hard to obtain free places those could not bo worked out at their own school. He did not think that it was ever intended that this condition 'of affairs should exist. At least two Governors had told him that they considered it a great act of injustice. “I see only one way nut of this,” His Lordship continued, “and that is for the Government to say what really should bo done. We should not he hound down to go through the undignified proceeding of begging from education hoards what wo have a right to have. Otherwise, 1 suppose, though we arc loyal people, wo shall have to use the powerful weapon of agitation in this question in an electoral or other campaign. Wo assist in electing members of education bqards, and though we have kept free from these elections, we have only to say the word, and wo know what Catholics will do.” Wellington, December 13. Replying to a deputation of Hutt tomato growers the Prime Minister (the Hon. Mr Massey), agreed to recommend the allocation of a sum for the purpose of experimenting on the lilies proposed with the object of discovering, if possible, and preventing the blight which has ruined an enormous number of plants this season.
