THE LABOURERS’ ACT AND MARRIAGE.
AMUSING LETTER FROM A SWEETHEART.
An amusing letter from a sweetheart to an applicant for a labourer’s cottage was read by a solicitor at the Duncaughlin Local Government Board enquiry.
The applicant, John Phillips, said ho was unmarried, but had received the following letter from a lady he was engaged to:—• My dearest John,—l was very glad indeed to hear from you, and proud to hoar the day has at last come to decide whether you will get the cottage or not. I hope in Providence you will, though you say you are doubtful oii account of your being single. Them Brannigan letters no doubt will be against all single fellows, hut if you state your case to the Government inspector as good as you did to me, I am sure lie won’t refuse. Besides, you were saying Lord Fingall would not object, and that is a lot in your favour. I was in Fortunes a few day ago looking at real nice pieces of furniture that would suit the house grand, and they wore cheap as well. Deaf'Jack, this enquiry means a lot to both of us. You knew long before now how fond I am of you, but, all the same, if you do not get the house nothing will keep me from going to America in the spring, as I am not going to lose all my time hoping and dreaming of you and the cottage with the roses round the door. (Laughter). Three long years since wo became engaged, and I stuck to my promise to wait until we could see how the cottage would go. I am' aS fond of you as ever, and if you fail in the house make up your mind and we will both go to America next spring.—Yours to a cinder, Annie Yvnch.
Then followed five crosses for kisses. The Inspector said he would do his best for her.—Belfast exchange.
