COMMONWEALTH CABLES.

Sydney, December 9. Alderman Cocks has been elected Lord Mayor, securing fifteen votes to the retiring Mayor’s nine votes. Lord Mayor Clarke was only eight months in office. Responding to the toast of his health, after Mr. Cocks was elected, he said that his ambition was to fill the full term. He believed that he would have secured the coveted honour if outside influence had not been used against him. He much regretted that outside influence could be so unfair, because ho had shown backbone. The Lord Mayor’s salary has been fixed at £ISOO.
