(Notes by “Cicero.”) The Stratford-owned 'Bercola is-now shoeing improved form, and should be ‘ch'crry ripe” by the time Taranaki and Stratford meetings are with us. In the near future Con the Shaughran and his brother Grattan will be sold by auction to wind up an estate. The much “boomed” Lord Lupin showed great pace at Feilding, and will be worth remembering in future events. Royal Scotch is well .cared for by the Australian handicappers, as the weights for the Perth Cup prove. The race in question is run over a 2-mde course, and Royal Artillery’s son is asked to carry the steadier of 9.5, whilst in the Railway Stakes, run over U miles, he is weighted at 9.10. S. Brereton, the Waverley trainer, intends bringing five horses to the Stratford meeting. Local punters threw in for a good win over The Dodger, at Feilding. It is reported that his owner landed a tidy sum by the win of Cordon Rougi’s son. Virtue, who won at the recent Takapuna meeting, and returned a large dividend was formerly owned by the Hawke’s Bay owner, T. H. Lowry, and cost that gentleman 400 guineas as a yearling. Just previous to the race won by him, he was offered by his owner (Mr Harris) to an Auckland owner for the modest sum of £lO.
* The Stratford Club are to be congratulated on securing such good nominations for their annual meeting in face of strong counter attractions. The Dodger will be an absentee, from the Christmas and New Year meetings, as it is intended to “fire” the brown gelding, on the suspicious leg. Mr TJ Pilkington heads the list of English owners for the past season, with a total of £26,822, of which amount his colt Prince’ Palatine contributed £20,730, whilst Mr Hulton, who figures second on the list with £16,000, won no less than 40 races. In five seasons’ racing Frank Wootton, the Australian horseman, has ridden over 700 winners. A truly wonderful record, for a lad who has just turned 19 years.
J. Butler’s filly, Connie is looking particularly well just now, and should have 'no difficulty in breaking her maiden status at Christmas time.
The southern lightweight, E. Emerson will in future act as first horseman to Sir G. Clifford. Emerson is one of the best light-weights in the Dominion at present. ■
