CHILD’S PATHETIC END. (Per Press Association.) Invercargill, December 3. At Hindis Farm yesterday, Freda Williams, four years of age, while gathering butter-cups, foil into a well and was drowned. The well was covered with grass!, and its existence was unknown to the child’s guardians.

BAKERS AND NIGHT SHIFT. Auckland, December 3. The inability of bakers and their employees to arrive at an agreement in regard to the night shift has resulted in the issue of an ultimatum to between forty and fifty operative linkers to cease work on Saturday unless what they regard as the spirit of the arbitration award is adhered to by certain master bakers. Only four or five employers are concerned. The Court recently abolished the night shift, except on payment of double time. Since then employers halve made repeated applications to have the clause relating to night shift suspended for twelve months on the ground ihat it involves great inconvenience and expense. Last Saturday an order was granted suspending the order for six months, allowing an extra payment of 7s 6d weekly for men so employed. The Union claim that an order supplementing an award should be issued only in cases of emergency, and where the consent of both sides has been obtained, whereas they Were never consulted by the Court.

P QSTM AST ER.-CENERAL HONOURED. Christchurch, December 3. The Hon. Mr. Rhodes, PostmasterGeneral, was entertained by bis'constituents at Leeston last night and presented with a gold paper-knife. The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher and Dr. Fornaro were also present. Mr Rhodes, in a speech, defended the appointment of Mr. Robertson to the Civil Service Board. Mr. Fisher said that next session the Government would legislate for, pensions for invalids.

TWO MEN SCALDED. Wellington, December 3. A serious accident occurred at the Pofcone Woollen Mills this morning. A pipe connected with the steam press in the hosiery room burst, and two married men named W. Elder and A. Walker were scalded, the former abour. the arms and the latter about the face and head. The injured men were removed to the Wellington Hospital.
