RUNAWAY LAKE.
A DEEP CHASM FORMED
Dunkirk Lake, near Northwick, Cheshire, has suddenly emptied itself for the second time in a few months. The district is famous for its honeycombed appearance, duo to snbsid mces caused by brine-pumping and rock salt mining. Last May, the lake, which was formed after a landslide some twenty years ago, /suddenly emptied itself, millions of gallons of wator mysteriously disappearing into the earth. Between two and three months later tho cavity again filled with water, and attained almost its normal level. During the last days of October, however, it has been slowly receding again, and on the morning of October 10th the whole of the water quickly vanished, and there was also an extensive landslide on one side, while the bed of the lake appears to have sunk many feet. The chasm is said to bo almost two hundred feet deep in places. Cracks in the earth are noticeable for some distance around, and a public foetpath which passes near the spot has been closed as being dangerous. /
