THE STAR OF CANADA (Per Association.)

Gisborne, November 26. Langlands and Co., who recently undertook what was regarded as a forlorn hope in the refloating of the wrecked Star of Canada, are meeting with signal success in their efforts. This evening the engineroom was pumped dry and much valuable auxiliary machinery is now being retrieved. The main engines are practically undamaged by their long immersion in the water and will be left in place, Langlands hoping to lise them to propel the vessel to Auckland when they have completed their task. They are, very confident of success now, and hope in a few weeks to be able to hand the monster steamer over to the workmen at the Calliope dock, Auckland.

I) ARGAYILLE’S DIFFICULTY. Dargaville, November 26. The Borough Council has applied for, an instalment of £6OOO on account of ( the £20,000 loan approved. The Ad-, vances Office wires that payment has been delayed in consequence, of the' amending'Act of 1912, which requires all moneys paid after the passing of, the Act to be at the rate at which the' loan was raised, plus 2s 6d per cent.' administration expenses. The Act: also requires a resolution by the local ( authority pledging it to pay_ the in-1 creased rate. The Council is called on to pass such a resolution and have the debentures gigned before the £6OOO : s advanced. The money is being urgently reouired for contracts in progress'; The Mayor gave the undertaking asked for, but the Council passed a resolution protesting against “the unprecedented action of the Department,” demanding the fulfilment of the contract entered into, at the rate of £3 10s per annum, with a sinking fund of £1 6s 6d (the loan being repayable in 36) years) and condemning the alteration of the terms on winch the loan was agreed to by the ratepayers.
