These were all cleared during the day at £7 ss, yearling heifers and steers were penned in very big numbers, but were not enquired for, very low being cleared. Competition for empty heifers and food cows was very keen; a big numer of bulls were yarded, those available for-dairy purposes realised from £4 2s 6d to £6 ss, the balance being bought for the works at prices ranging according to weight, from £2 15s to £5 17s 6d. Several lines of 2) and 3 year steers wore disposed of at from £5 14s to £5 17s 6d, 2 year sfeers £4 14s, • other prices realised were: Jersey 15 month heifers £4 Is to £4 12s, grades

At Burnside (Dunedin) on Wednesday, Prime wethers made from 28s np io 31s 6d; prime ewes to 28s 6d; prime shorn wethers, 22s to 235. There were 173 lambs forward, a heavy increase on previous yarding®, 81 being the highest number previously penned this season. Owing to the large number forward, prices at the commencement of the sale were back 2s per head, but towards the finish they firmed up a little. 181 head of cattle were yarded, and although the best sold up to £ls 17s 6d, there were no very heavy weights forward. Despite the fact that the values recorded were not quite on a par with last week’s extreme rates (says the Otago Daily Times), the price’ of beef was nevertheless highly remunerative to .the seller, rates ranging from 37s Gd to 40s per 1001 b. There seems every prospect too that the high values now ruling for cattle will continue for some time to come, as we understand that inquiries are being made as to the prospect of securing live cattle and sheep for shipment to West Australia.
