Lord Islington was present at a display given by the Now Zealand Cadets at the Caledonian Grounds this afternoon, and to-night he opened the local, branch of the Overseas Club. Touching on defence matters, His Excellency said that without go’ng beyond the realms of propriety in the position he occupied, he believed that in the future New Zealand would have to consider carefully one of two alternatives: whether it would continue and increase its financial contribution to the Home fleet, or whether it would, in co-operation with its neighbours in Australia, undertake the establishment of a fleet in the southern seas He wished it to lie understood he him-, self passed no op'nron on either of these alternatives. It was a mattci for the leading men in New Zealand to discuss with the leading men at Home and the leading men in the other Dominions. To-morrow morning he will leave for Invercargill, where he will open a branch of the Overseas Club at night. On Friday he wil open a branch of the Navy League, and on Saturday he w 11 proceed north, on route for Wellington. (
