BOY ATTEMPTS SUICIDE.
“THERE ARE OTHER GIRLS.”
MAG ISTRATE RECOMMENDS SPANKING.
A love affair -between a girl of sixteen and a boy of seventeen years old nearly terminated in a tragic manner at Hawarden a few days ago, when the boy, William Walker, attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself. The bullet did not have the desired effect, and consequently Walker appeared before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., at the Christchurch Police Court on a
charge of attempting to commit sni cide.
Sub-Inspector McGrath was proceeding to tell the Court that the case arose out of a love affair when Mi Bishop interposed—- “ What, a love affair? Why, the boy is only seventeen years old!”
“That is so, sir, and the girl is only sixteen,” replied the Sub-Inspector.
“Why did you try to shoot your self?” asked the Magistrate. “I was not in my right mind then sir.” “What was it all about,?”
The accused said bo was going with a girl, and be bad been keeping company with her for about a year, until the girl’s parents stopped the courtship.
“Well, surely there are other girls,” remarked Ids Worship. “She’s not the only pebble on the -beach. I think yon ought to be put to bod and spanked.” The case was remanded for a week.
