Mr H. Thompson has been engaged as starter for the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting, vice Mr A. W. Budge, resigned. Mr G. Elliott, farmer, aged 35, was yesterday morning assisting in the cheese factory at Rongokokako when ho suddenly dropped dead.—P.A.
"Mrs Whyte, whose death was recorded in the Argus yesterday, was one of the oldest settlers in the Pith am district, having resided on the Hastings road for about 30 years. The house she occupied was erected from pit-sawn timber, sawmills being not known in the district at that time. The deceased lady had attained the ripe age of 80 years.
The Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Bristol and Messrs H. H. Risely and Palliser Martin represented that city at the unveiling at Halifax (Canada) of a tablet commemorative of Cabot s discovery of that island. The Duke of Connaught said to the delegates; ‘‘Gentlemen, when you'return, please tell the citizens of_ Bristol how loyal the Canadians are/'
