HUMOUR OF A ROYAL PARDON.
“MERCY” FOR WOMAN WHO WAS FINED HALF A CROWN.
The King has remitted a fine imposed upon the wife of Major-General Browne, residing at Broadstairs, who was convicted in May last by the Cinque Ports Magistrates, sitting at Margate, of keeping a dog without a license.
A license had been, taken out for the dog, but the defendant was unable to produce it at the time. The royal pardon and remission of the half crown fine is in the following impressive terms: — GEORGE R.I. • George the Fifth, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and the British Dominions Beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith.
To the Justices of the Thanet Division of the Liberties of the Cinque Ports, and to others whom it may concern, GREETING!
Whereas Mrs G. F. Browne was, at the Town Hall, Margate, on the 28th May, 1912, convicted of keeping a dog without a license and ordered to pay a fine of 2s 6d and costs. NOW KNOW YE, that WE, in consideration of some circumstances humbly represented unto us, We are graciously pleased to extend our Grace and Mercy unto the said Mrs G. F. Browne, and to pardon and remit to her the amount of the aforesaid fine.
Our Will and Pleasure, therefore, is that you will take notice hereof and that for so doing this shall be a sufficient warrant.
Given at our Court at St, James’s, the second day of August, 1912, in the Third Year of our Reign, by His Majesty’s command.
R. McKENNIA
It appears that at the time of the police court proceedings, Major-Gen-eral Browne, having only just returned from abroad, was unable to find the license, but it was subsequently produced, and it was shown that the Kent County Council had been in fault by issuing the name of Mrs Browne as a dog-owner who had omitted to renew the license.
