THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, November 12

’The General Assembly of the Pres byterian Church of New Zealand wa; opened at St. John’s Church to-night when a service was held at which tin new Moderator, the Rev. T. Cameron. 8.A., was formally elected and delivered his inaugural address. The service was conducted by the retiring Moderator, the Rev. G. Lindsay. A number of sessional committees were set up.

SUCCESSFUL WATER DIVINING

Christchurch, November 12

The Hev. H. Mason, water diviner, who last week, at the instance of the Fields and Experimental Division of the Department of Agriculture, went to the Division’s experimental area at Morven Hills, Central Otago, for the | purpose of locating water, has returned after successfully locating water at nine points on two hundred acres lon the area. 'His success is of great importance, as on ! other portions of the arid area in Ccnj tral Otago water may be similarly -located, thus obviating extensive irrigation schemes. Tho Rev. Mason left ! l ist night for Wellington, and intends ; leaving the Dominion this week.

TUKNTHAM BOOKMAKER FINED

Wellington, November 12

Alexander Boyd and Thomas Dalton appeared before Mr G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court tin’s afternoon, charged with betting on the Trentham racecourse on October 28th. Constable Smith said, in evidence, that, he had approached Dalton on the course and said, “Give mo half a dollar on Lady Volga.” Defendant said, “Keep dark; the ‘D’ lias his glasses on us from the roof.” He then held his hand down by his side and told witness to drop the half-crown in it. This witness did, and later he gave him a further half-crown, saying he could book the bet to “G.S.” Dalton was lined £25, with costs £6 16s Bd. The hearing of the charge against Boyd was adjourned till next morning.
