Throe hundred cordite cartridges were found in a rubbish bin when the dust-cart was making its rounds at Parnell on Thursday. It is imposeibio to predict what the result would have boon had the explosives remained unnoticed and been deposited at the destructor. Stray cartridges have been

found on previous occasions, but never before in Auckland has such colossal carelessness as that displayed in this instance been discovered.

In the case of William, Knox, charged on three counts with performing an illegal operation, a re-trial took place to-day. The jury on a, former occasion failed to agree, and a fresh trial was ordered for the 19th inst. To-mor-row a second charge against Knox will be proceeded with. Addressing the jury to-day, the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, said that lie was sorry our laws were so different from those of other countries —Germany, France, and some parts of America—where an agreement of twelve jurors was not required. He did not see why, if judges were not asked to agree on questions of fact, twelve jurors should be asked to do so.
