ALLUVIAL MINING
Westport, November 8
The Carthago Gold Mines, Limited, a small colhpany, formed here some time back, has successfully solved the problem of working our low lying bead) gold leads. The mine has been making a steady profit of £l2 to £l3 per day, and it is confidentially predicted that the whole of the beaches from Westport to Ngakawa will now be worked on thfir principle, which is the invention of a local man. The fact that those sands can be raised and treated for a penny per yard is a factor in gold mining that must give the whole of this West Coast a fillip, as there arc many miles of similar beaches from Cape Farewell to Jackson’s Bay.
