SCHEME NIPPED IN THE BUD
What is alleged to have been a neat immigration fraud (says the Sydney Daily Telegraph) has 'been nipped in the bud by Mr Percy Hunter, Director of Immigration, who is at present visiting
- Mr Hunter was recently walking along one of London’s principal thoroughfares when he “observed the offices of a. • “Colonial Supply Association.” His curiosity being'aroused, he entered and engaged in conversation with a suave attendant, who informed him that the association existed for the purpose of assisting persons going to Australia to secure vacant positions, for which a fee was charged to cover the cost of agreements, etc. Following upon his conversation, Mr Hunter cabled to Mr McGowen, asking that inquiries might he made as to the bona. Tides of the association. The matter was placed in the .hands of the police, who, after investigation, were able to secure evidence which led to the arrest in London of the four members of the association. . Information has now been received that they were prosecuted for conspiracy, and pleaded guilty. They were, however, released upon making a refund of money received and the payment of costs. They were also ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
