The Iflernington meeting opened today. Unfortunately showers fell during the morning, and rain fell steadily at noon, and continued until the Derby was run. The new stand accommodated the large crowd, who were squeezed out of the other stands. Several State Gubernatorials arrived before the • first race. Results: — Maiden Plate, of 300 sovs; one mile.—Moe 1, Onega 2, Waggle 3. Won easily by four lengths, with .half a length between second and third. Time, Imin 42i ! scc. Hotham Handicap, of 300 sovs; one miles and a half—Lord Alwyne, 7.11, 1; Nangar, 8.5, 2; Golden Point, 8,5, 3. Hallowmass 8.3 J, Sandbath 8.1, Shuja 8.1, Blind Harry 7.7, Mountain Oak 7.5, Adgio 7.3, Pearl King 7.1, Salvator Rosa 6.13, Uncle Matt 6.9, and Deacon Skinner 6.7, also started. Lord Alwyne was in front at the distance from Nangar and Golden Point, and in a very fast run home won by half a length, with four lengths between second and third. Time, 2min 36|sec. Flavian, Captain White, Indiscreet, Cadonia, Aurofodina, Bobadea, Eyeglass, Artesian, Lady Medallist and Wilari also started. Duke Foote took charge round the turn from Aurofodina, Eyeglass, Piastre and Lady Medallist. Duke Foote led into the straight, when he was warmly challenged by Eudorus, but holding the imported horse safe, he won by half a length, with three lengths between second and third. Time, min sec. Save for a slight bleeze which raised some dust in the city and on the road to Riccarton, the weather was beautifully fine for the opening day of the Spring Racing Carnival of 1912, and with ample shelter provided at the course the wind caused no discomfort to the very large crowd of spectators. The course was in splendid order, and some high-class racing resulted. Haskayne at once went to the front, and as the field came into the course proper was showing the way to Odessa, Soldiers’ Chorus, Obligant and Midnight Sun. they passed the stand, Soldiers’ Chorus had taken second place from Odessa, while Allegory was running at the head of the others. So they ran to the mile post and along the back where Haskayne was followed by Obligant, Odessa and Soldier's Chorus, with Undecided at the head of the others. (A furlong further on Haskayne was still in charge but nearing the live furlong post Masterpiece,’ who had been running alongside Allegory, improved his position and took'fifth place as the top of the .turn was reached. At this stage Haskayne was still in front, with Undecided and Soldiers’ Chorus at the head of the! others. As they rounded the turn ihto the straight, Masterpiece put in his ; run on the outside, and halfway down had taken charge. Midnight Sun then put in a claim, and finishing well got 'up in time to beat Masterpiece by 5 half a bead! The rider (Luke Wilson), of Midnight Sun, in the New Zealand Cup, lived in Stratford some years ago. His father (Mr H. Wilson) was in the employ of Mr W. Buckthought, butcher, and later with Mr Jones, of Midhirst. Mr Wilson raced a couple of ponies in Taranaki a few years ago. At the Queensland Turf Club’s meeting on Saturday the Hopeful Stakes was won by Duninald from Scottish Prince and Flaxona. Fifteen horses started, and Duninald won by a length and a half. The Derby resulted in a dead heat between Cleo and Koatanui, with Barambah third. Five started, and the time was 2inin f * / 37$sec. In the run off Cleo won in 2min 40.' sec. At the Mooreficld (Now South Wales) meeting on Saturday the November Handicap was won by the New Zealand horse Monoplane, Bon Frisco being second, and Delorium third. Six horses started. Won by half a length. Time, 2min B|scc. At the same meeting the Bexley Mile fell to Wild West (New Zealand), who beat Meses and Mandowa and eight others. Wild West won by a head in Imin 43$sec.
