IMPERIAL POLITICS.
THE IRISH SENATE. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) London, October 31. The Government proposes that the first Irish Senate shall serve for a quinquennium, and the election thereafter be on a basis of proportional representation, Ulster to have It Senators, Leinster 11, Munster 9, and Connaught 0. The Irish Unionists are dissatisfied, and contend that it all the Senators are Unionists they will be hopelessly outnumbered in joint sittings. Mr Ramsay McDonald declares that the experiment is a mistake. If proportional representation is justified it ought to be applicable to the first Senate. (Received 10.5 a.m.) London, October 31. The Standing Committee in the House of Commons on the Trade Union Bill rejected it by three votes. On an amendment by the Labour Party and intended to revise the Osborne judgment, some of the Liberals voted with the Labourites, but the Unionists enabled the Government to carry the rejection. Mr Asquith (Premier), replying to Mr E. B. Faber (Liberal M.P. for Hants) said no useful purpose would be served by the appointment of a Royal Commission to report on uuiersal military training.
