TIUIEE SALUTARY SENTENCES

At the Supreme Court Leonard hotter, with a long list of previous convictions, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment cumulative on ten charges of forgery, uttering, theft, and false pretences, and was declared an habitual criminal. Hubert Henry Keast, for indecent assault, on two charges received a sentence of four years on each, the charge to he cumulative. Francis Cunningham, aged 21, was sentenced to ten years for indecently assaulting a male person.

Eleanor Eileen Christian, who pleaded guilty to charges of bigamy and issuing valueless cheques, was committed at the Supreme Court for sentence. She was married at Christmas time, 1895, to Herbert Christian, her maiden name being Nelly Emmeline Dcerlovc. She lived with her husband from time to time, there being three children by the marriage. But posing as a widow, she married Robert John McDonald at Auckland on sth instant, and subsequently issued a valueless cheque. Police inquiries as to her antecedents led to the discovery of the bigamous marriage. Accused said she really cared for McDonald and wished to clear the way for Christian to get a divorce.
