It is understood by the Inglewood Record, that Dr. Korr-Hislop has ttceived a Government appoint,no »t as medical inspector of school children tor the provincial district of Cants mi v Mr.. John Norton, after a long holiday abroad, consolidated his remarks to interviewers into a couple of sentences. He said: “I was fifteen months away. I spent a third of my time in a lunatic asylum, a third in gaol, and the remainder , I ’ wits ’unconscious'. 1 That’s' the sort of holiday 1 had!” The funeral of the late Mr W. W. McCardle, Mayor of Pahiatua, took place yesterday, being very largely attended by both town and country residents despite the showery weather. The cortege, which was a very representative and lengthy one, was headed by the Pahiatua Brass Band, playing tfie Dead March from Saul. The Borough Councillors, Borough staff, Fire Brigade and members of various institutions and local bodies to which the late Mayor belonged were well represented. Many business premises were draped, and all the shops closed for two hours to enable the business people to attend the funeral. In the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the Hon. W. F. Massey (Prime Minister) said his attention had been drawn to the fact that an exmember of the House, Mr Thomas Shailer Weston, had died at New Plymouth recently. Mr Weston had been a member of the House from 1881 to 1883, and afterwards he had held high offices as a public servant. He moved that the House place on record its appreciation of the deceased gentleman’s services to New Zealand, and that assurances of sympathy be tendered to his family in their bereavement. The motion was supported by Messrs Russell, Buddo and Colvin, and affirmed by the House.
