A PROSPEROUS YEAR
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press 'Association.) (Received 9.15 a.in.) Sydney, October 22. 'Die Budget allowed railway and tramway earnings for the year to be £8,872,866. After paying working expanses there is a net return on the capital invested of .Cl 10s Id per cent. Deposits in the Government Savings Bank increased 2.) millions. The total balance to credit is £435,000 deposits being £18,612,000. The Estimates showed: Expenditure on public works, total £6,113,1/0, including £2,427,000 for new railways and duplications of rolling stock. The Treasurer anticipates difficulty : n raising the loan money required, but lias every confidence that he will be able to provide £6,000,000. He pronoses to raise £200,000, being taxation from probate. Stamp duties to the amount of £70,000 resulted from the readjustment of the Income Tax last year. Seven thousand seven hundred and thirty-four buildings were completed in Sydney and suburbs at a cost of £4,195,017 —a record. The total overseas trade was £59,504,829, an increase of £4,230,385. The excess of exports over imports was nearly five million. Butter exports increased £6,606,000. The Treasurer anticipated a decrease hi the wool clip, owing to the drought There has been a satisfactory harvest. The Herald’s preliminary estimate of the wheat crop gives an average of ten bushels per acre. The paper adds that any estimate at this stage would be problematical, everything depending on the rainfall during the next few weeks.
