THE CHURCH AND LABOUR.

AT THE AUCKLAND SYNOD. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, October 23. The Diocesan Synod discussed the proposal to appoint a committee to meet representatives of the Labour movement in regard to the alleged hostility of the latter to the church. The mover of the resolution, the Rev. Mr Cleary, .of Waihi, said the miners there had no time whatever for church. During the strike not 60 out of 1500 strikers could be seen in the churches of the town. An amendment moved by the Rev. Mr Beatty, that the next business be proceeded with, was lost. Bishop Crossley urged Mr Cleary to withdraw the motion in favour of a proposal to appoint a social questions committee for the purpose of watching affairs and taking action where necessary. He wished it to bo understood that he was not influenced by fear of meeting the Labour Party; he thought the latter knew this.
