NORTH MT. LYELL FIRE.

GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. Sydney, October 22. The New South Wales Government has donated £IOOO to the Lyell fund. Melbourne, October 22. The Federal Government has voted £2500 to the Lyell relief fund. FLOODING THE MINE. (Received 23, 9.15 a.m.) Hobart, October 23. A conference of Mount Lyell directors and raining inspectors decided that the only way to check the fire was to flood the mine from a stream deflected in and pouring in 138.000 gallons daily. It is anticipated that a similar quantity will be required for percolating the bottom levels. Brattices have been placed at the outlets, practically sealing the mine. The relatives of the missing men left in the mine will be advised when the bodies are recovered. A public meeting, at which the Governor and the Premier were present, arranged to institute a general relief fund.
