The committee also asked authority to "alter the angles of the present lights where necessary. '“With these lights,” said Councillor Ward, in moving the adoption of th. report, “the streets should be fairly well lighted. Regarding the south end of the town, you will notice several new lights are to be placed in tho-;> places where now there is absolute darkness.” Councillor J. H. Thompson seconded the motion. He was of the opinion

that the darkest spots had been selected for illumination.

Councillor J. 1). Hcaly moved, as an amendment, that the question of installing new lights ho held over uu hi such time as the present lighting system should he brought Within a roa sonable expenditure for upkeep. There were eighty-one lights in the liorouga, for which’ the Council paid- the Electrical Supply Company £307 for cur rent. During'tho last twe* months the upkeep, renewals, etc., had cost £l2. that meant that the present lighting system was costing £Jol a year, anti -yet they proposed .to add another expenditure of £IOO. He did not believe in the Council “providing funds for the Electric Light Company.” It was absolutely ridiculous. The Mayor: Any Councillor second that amendment ? - * • Councillor R. McK. Morison: No, sir; I rise to support the motion. With regard to Councillor Healy’s remarks, I must say that he is very short-sight-ed. He is quite—unfair to those who are unfortunate enough to live iu those localities where there is absolute darkness. Counciilpr Hcaly forgets that we arc taking gdvico whcijyhy the cost for upkeep will be considerably reduced. Councillor Boon moved as a further amendment that the matter be “hung up” until the next meeting. It was a big matter, and they had had no time to consider the report. The Mayor agreed with this view. It was only right that the Councillors themselves should thoroughly digest die matter. Councillor Dingle said that this expenditure could be done_ without until the autumn. There was no immediate hurry. The amendment was lost, and the report was adopted. Councilor Healy then gave notice of motion to have this rescinded, as a protest against spending £6OO on street lighting. Councillor Thompson was added to the Lighting Committee on account of valuable sen ices rendered, and his special knowledge of the subject.
