Jn spanking at the opening of the Newman Cheese Factory on Thursday (says the ‘Age,’ it was stated that the Dairy Union during the last few years had exported butter to Franco and other places. This did not contain a particle of salt, and not a solitary complaint had been received. “It did not matter,” remarked one, “what ultimately became of the butter so long as we received top prices for it.” A well-attended and highly enthusiastic meeting was held at Hawera yesterday afternoon, when a branch of the Taranaki Provincial Scottish Society Was formed in the district. Mr. James Davidson presided. Officebearers were elected as follows: — President, Mr. James Davidson; vicepresident, Mr. J. F. Grillanders; and a committee of twelve. Nor man by, Okaiawa, and Manaia are ‘to be enrolled in the Hawera branch, and a meeting will lie held in these districts by the Hawera branch, in order to stimulate interest in the Society. A number of letters were received from gentlemen in these districts/ regretting their inability to attend, but promising a hearty support of the movement.
