SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford School Committee was held last night. Mr P. Skoglund, chairman, presided over a good attendance of members, Mr J.. W. B. Jones, whose apology for absence was accepted, being the only member not present. CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary of the Taranaki Education Board wrote to the effect that the Board was again bringing tip the matter of the Agricultural Scholarships before the Minister. The Board had decided to amend its application for permission to sell the school residence and increase the play-ground space. The Overseer had been instructed to attend to the matter of repairs mentioned in letter of 20tli met. Messrs Masters and Rogers had bec.i requested to make enquiries into the scheme for .covering in tenniscov;rt and were to report to the Board at its next meeting.—Received. ! ' VISITING COMMITTEE. ; 'The "Visiting Committee' (Messrs G. Smart and <I. W. Boon) reported that everything 'at the school and 1 grounds was in' good'order. ; 'The''Board' of Education's men had enclosed the foundations of the Infant's school with iron and had put netting on the ventilators. HEADMASTER'S REPORT. The Headmaster (Mr F. A. Tyrer) reported 'as follows:—"I regret to state that the mumps still remain in the district, and that through them the school attendance is stil materially affected Our attendance is now, on an average, running at 490, pr'mary school, and 105, secondary school—s9B in ;.il. The normal attendance is from G3O to 640. Most of the children now away from school through illness are in the higher standards. As the nnnu.il examination is to begin on the 24th, it looks, at present, as if not more than eighty per cent, of our pupil" will be able to attend. 'Those who do attend, and who have recently had mumps will scarcely do themselves justice. Stratford is again an examining centre for the University and Education Department. I should like to have water laid on the school glasshouse." The report was adopted, and the request for water granted. GENERAL. On the motion of Mr McMillan, it was decided to ask the Board to insto.l three hose-taps and hose in front of the school building or in any other convenient place, the object being for fire prevention and for cleaning purposes. Messrs J. W. McMillan, T. C. Fookcs, and S. Clark were appointed a Baths Committee to supervise and report monthly to the Committee.
