THE TAVIUNUI TO BLAME. (Received 9.35 a.m.) Sydney, October 15. The Full Court, in their reserved judgment on the Nera-Taviuni collision, found that the Taviuni was to blame, thus reversing Justice Street’s finding. " SALE OF RACEHORSES. At a sale of racehorses, Hot Air brought 570 guineas and Queen Regent 350 guineas. THE SUGAR COMMISSION. The Sugar Commission has resumed its sittings. The examination of Mr Knox, general manager of the Sugar Company was continued. H© expressed the ©pinion that the White Australia policy as applied to North Queensland agricultural work was hopeless. It was not proved that the sugar industry could be carried on in the tropics with whites. He considered there was no chance of beet sugar endangering .the can© sugar industry. In .Australia and in New Zealand there was no duty" on sugar, yet no beet sugar was introduced. , The Chairman announced that the Commission unreservedly" accepted the limitation of inquiry as imposed by the High Court injunction, and that the Commission would accept Mr Knox’s statement, which was previously refused. PROSPECTS OF GOOD HARVEST. Melbourne, October 15. General rains have fallen, and a good harvest is considered assured. DEFENCE IN THE PACIFIC. Lord Denman, Governor-General of the Commonwealth, reviewed and was entertained at luncheon with the Canadian cadets. In a speech he said that Canada and Australia were keenly" interested in the maintenance of British power in the Pacific. Within a few years an Australian, and possibly an Australasian fleet and a Canadian fleet,would be ready to co-operate with the British fleet in any emergency arising hi order to maintain the British position in the Pacific.
