BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough • Council was hold last evening, when there wore present: Tho Mayor (Mr. W. P. Kirkwood), Councillors J. W. Boon, N. 4. King, R. Dingle, T. Lawson, J. McAllister. S. Ward, J. i). Healy, and R. McK. M orison. Correspondence, Correspondence was received from the Director of the Live Stock and .Meat Di vision of the Department of Agriculture (Mr. C. J. Reakes), stating that the Council’s letter “re present arrangement under which condemned stock were temporarily held in a paddock at Stratford pending thfeir removal to Patea by rad,” had been received, and a reply would bo given at an early date. A letter to the same effect was received from Mr. T. Ronayno, general manager of railways. Mr. A. K. Smart, lion, secretary pro tern.-of the committee of Master Clumbers of Now Plymouth, wrote that in view of the action of the workers lately in forming a union, and making demands on the employers, it was considered absolutely essential that a Taranaki Association of Employers should be formed at once for mutual benefit. He asked for tho support of the Council. The letter was received.
Four ratepayers in Romeo, Ariel, and Cordelia Streets begged to apply for water connection on their several properties. They understood that water already came along Romeo Street as far as Mr. Maxwell’s corner, so that it was only a matter of about 12 to 15 chains further extension.— Referred to tho Works’ Committee for a report. Mr. A. Sponco. requested that , the Council grant him a rebate cf one week’s rent on account of inconvenience caused through repairs to the Borough Chambers.—Acceded to. Mr. Peter Hancock wrote as fol-lows!-—“Could you inform mo what local body has the looking after of the Flint lioad, or if there is any such body, as it is a disgrace to them, whoever they are, to allow it to get in the state that it is in at present? I don’t see that anything has been dene on it for a decade) or, maybe, for a generation. Not only that, but it is in a dangerous condition for the persons using it, so I hope you will see to this matter as soon as convenient.” It was stated this was a boundary road, under the joint control of the Borough Council and the County Council. it was decided that a report of the road should be forwarded io trie County Council for consideration. Works Committee.
'The Works Committee reported that they had fixed the Avages of the engine driver ait 10s per day. Mr. W. Read, whoso tender was accepted for repairs etc., to tho Municipal Chambers, had notified his inability to carry out the Avork, and tho committee had therefore accepted the next lowest tender, that of Bellringer Bros. The work was noA\’ in hand. They begged to rccomrnent that the request of residents of Flint Road West, lie held over for tho nresent. The Borough Overseer, Mr. T. 1). Sullivan, reported on tho progress of Avorks for the past month, as under: —Patching had been done on the folInAving streets:—Regan Street, duliet Street, Portia Street, Hamlet Street, Orlando Street, Rosalind Street, Miranda Street', Celia Street; BroadAvay, Brecon Road, Wnnvick Road, SAvansea Road,- Pembroke Road,jj, and , Clotpn Road, .(Shingle had, been put on, Juliet Street opposite the Stratford Club. A quantity of sKinglo had been carted from the river and stacked in Juliet Street for future use. The formation of footpath in Hamlet Street, south of Page Street, had been completed. The work of gravelling it Avould bo put in hand Avlien the fillings Ayere sufficiently consolidated to receive it. A footpath in' Hamlet Street North from Regan Street to Mr. A. O’Leary’s gate had been formed and gravelled. Six culverts had been inserted during the month. The shed near the fire station in Lear Street had been prepared to house the road roller, and the necessary entrance thereto had been made. A lean-to shed had been made for the Avafcer cart. A tin. pvater main had been put in from Juliet Street to Mr. MaxAvell’s property, Orlando Street. Four Avater services had been put in during the month. All fire plugs bad been inspected and are in good order. Abattoir Committee. The Abattoir Committee recommended that the slaughterman’s application for an increase in his contract price for killing from £225 to £217 per annum be agreed to under the same conditions of employment that noAV exist. With regard to the disposal of blood and offal, tenders had been called, and that of Mr. S. Thomp son, at £lB per annum, had been accepted.—Adopted.
Abattoir Report. The folloAving stock Avas slaughtered at the Abattoirs during the month:— 53 cows, 7 heifers, 29 oxen, 2 calves, 255 sheep, and 22 pigs. Fees for the month Avero £46 10s 6d. Five head of cattle Avero condemned. Other Matters. Councillor Thompson moved that the Overseer prepare estimates for metalling and footpath in Juliet Street South.—Carried. Tho tenders of Messrs. A. Woodhead and W. E. Porter for leases of Borough reserves were accepted. Tho matter of gravelling a footpath in Miranda Street, giving access to Messrs. Percy Wilson’s and Dwyer’s properties Avas left in the hands ( f the Works Committee, Avith poAver to act.
