WAIHI DAY BY DAY.

WOMEN ABUSE R ESS DENT. (Per Press (Association.) '■ji t - j Waihi, October 12. There was , alleged disgraceful conduct by a number of women and children ■at the residence of Mr X. McWilliams, a Court official, which has had a serious effect on the resident referred to. Mr McWilliams, who had been suffering from influenza, now has had a serious relapse as the result of the scenes which occurred round his house, and as the result; also, of the disgusting language used to his wife. The other day large crowds engaged in screeching, intermingled with expressions of unprintable invectives. One woman threatened to burn the house. The effect upon Mr McWilliams is such as to necessitate calling in a doctor. The doctor appealed to the Union, which said it would do what it could to suppress annoyances, but it had very little control over women. Mr McWilliams had to arm himself for the protection of his wife, children, and property. Two constables are now in at night. No reason is assigned for riotous behaviour. Mrs McWilliams is a leading vocalist of the town, and on many occasions has rendered valuable service in organising concerts in aid of miners’ benevolent fund and industrial miners who had met with mishaps. It is, urged that as the police are insufficiently strong in numbers to scope with the conduct of women, a citizen force should be enrolled.

T’OTHER SIDE OF STORY. Waihi, October 12. In connection with the published statement re five less men going to work on Wednesday, and that only .iixty tons of ore were sent from the battery for crushing on Wednesday, the superintendent of the Waihi Co. stated this morning that five men “returned” to the battery on account of putting on two shifts, and that 260, nob 60, tons of ore were crushed. He further stated that now they were crusjiing over 300 tons a day, and three'shifts will ho put on next week, when, the tonnage per day will be increased to 400 tons.
