SPORTING.
NOTES BY “CICERO.” Handsome Maid, who races in the same nomination as Allure, lias joined J. Fryer’s team at Hawera. Princess Flo, who, is trained by 0. Cox, is very well just now, and will take a lot of beating 'in the Maiden at Waverley. Millbanks is going well in his work just now. He will be a starter in the Maiden at the forthcoming Waverloy meeting. The Native was put up for auction at Feildihg on Friday last, but failed to reach the reserve of 450 guineas. He was subsequently sold to an Australian buyer. As Labor Day has been nominated for the Auckland Spring Meeting, it looks as though Soult’s daughter will forfeit her New Zealand Cup engagement, for which event she has received some support. Sun Bird (Martian —Mary of Argyle) who is trained by Tilley, has been showing some pace’in her' work, and will ( be a starter in the Wellesley Stakes at the coming Wellington meeting. The stable mate, Bonny Helen, from whom great things are expected, will be reserved for the Welcome Stakes at the Canterbury Spring Meeting. The Auckland Racing Club is in- . stalling a new totalisator, which automatically issues and' registers the j tickets.; |The machine is;,an Australiak invention. ■ A patron of J.; Jfryer’s stable 1 rtfpurchased a' half brother to Goodwin Park. The price paid for the youngster was somewhere in the vicinity of £IOO. 1
In view of the approaching Waverley meeting, at which several Ipcallyowned horses are engaged, the fine weather experienced the last few days should have a beneficial result and al-low-trainers to give their charges some fast work.
I was pleased to, see that the Stratford Racing Club have increased the prize money for their meeting. This is a move in the right direction, and will be the means of bringing a better class of horse to the local meeting, which is now an important fixture. The meeting of Our King and Blefiot in the Guineas at Auckland next month should provide a- great. race. Bleriot’s form at Avondale was firstclass, whilst good judges consider Our King a really good colt; in fact, quite a top-notcher when thoroughly wound up.
Smilax is jumping very well on the Egmont track, and all going well Obligado’s son will' be a starter in the Hurdles at Waverley. A horse with the pace of Smilax should keep the opposition moving in a hack hurdle race.
Connie, an inmate of J. Butler’s establishment, is going particularly well just now, and must take some boating at the Wavcrley meeting. The - New Zealand horseman, B. Deeley rode Ladies’ Man to victory in the Ha'wkesbnry Handicap, and finished second on Zilper in the High Weight at til© HaWkesbury meeting last week. Deeley and Emerson are eagerly enquired for at meeting's on the “other side,” whilst that good horseman, Oliver, strange to say, is neglected. Grathan, the full brother to Con the Shanghran, is galloping in great style just now. This horse may run well at Wavcrley.
The poor showing made hy Bronze in the Spring and Metropolitan Handicaps, in which events she finished last, most come as a blow to her New Zealand admirers. Some of whom went so far as to class her with that great mare Cruciform.
The Australian handicappers are taking no risks with the New Zealand jumpers. Paisano carried 12.12 when he won on Saturday, while Continuance despite his failures in the Dominion was asked to carry 12.9 in the Steeplechase, in which event he finished third. Leonta (Conqueror—Fairwind) engaged in the "Waverley Cup, is a useful mare, and sure to win races this season. She is trained by F. Tilley at Fordell.
