FOOTBALL TEAMS AT DINNER

(Contributed.)

A very successful function was held last night at the Royal Tea Rooms, when the Mounted Rifles of D Squadron entertained the Infantry of II Company at their annual dinner, about forty members being present. Captain Dampen, commencing with the Territorial Grace: “For what wc ‘have’ received,” opened proceedings with a few well chosen words. He then introduced Captain Stevens, who rendered a few songs (While the fowls were being caught and plucked), and was loudly encored. The chicken and sweets were then disposed of. After dinner the toast of the King was proposed by Lieutenant Wilson, and the National Anthem was sung. Mr Wilson, in the course of his remarks, referred to the possibility of war within the next few years, when we would all be required to fight for

our King. Lieutenant Crawshaw, in proposing the toast of ,the Infantry, congratulated them on their splendid victory. He said it was a great victory and honour to them to have beaten a team with such a reputation as D Squadron. Continuing, Mr Crawshaw said that lie hoped this football contest between the Mountcds and Infantry would be an annual event, and with this object in view the officers had presented a shield for which to bo played. In concluding , lie hoped that next year and for many years to come they would all he assembled here again to talk things over, and although it gave them great pleasure to entertain their guests, the Infantry, to-night, yet he hoped that next year, having proved themselves victorious, they would bo the honoured guests, and ;ho was certain that the Infantry would lie only too pleased to reciprocate what it had been their pleasure to do tonight.

Mr Bowler suitably responded to this toast, and said he was certain that the Infantry would for many years to come be the guests of the Mmmteds, and that the shield would bo covered with their victories. Musical items and recitations wore given by Lieutenant Wilson, Lieutenant Crawshaw, Corporal Crawshaw, and Privates R. Marrett, G. R. Coleman, W. Walsh, N. Coleman, fehouban and Mr K. Munro. A most enjoyable evening, wag brought to a close at 10.30 p.m.
