! PENSIONER'S DEATH. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, October 2. The constable at Otorohanga telegraphed to headquarters at Auckland that at about noon yesterday an old age pensioner named John Warren, a white man, who lived with the Maoris, was burnt to death in a raupo whare at Otewa. Particulars are not yet available. FIRE AT MAKAREWA. Invercargill, October 2. A house at Makarewa, owned and occupied by Fred Wilson, was completely destroyed by lire with practically all its contents. The insurances are not available. LANDSLIDE AT SUMNER. Christchurch, October 2. The signs of the serious landslide on the Sumner road are being rapidly cleared away, and to-day all vehicular traffic was able to pass without hindrance. Workmen arc engaged in blasting blocks of stone which came off from the cliff face, and drays have been carrying away a good deal of metal for future use. The trams, are running as usual. The water supply is being kept up by means of the Clifton reservoir. Repairs to the damaged main cannot be effected until the debris is cleared away. A CHLNESE~BANKRUPT. Feilding, October 1. A bankrupt Chinaman, Ah Wah ('trading as Sing Lum Kee), stated before the Deputy Official Assignee at Feilding to-day that he carried on a profitable business as a fruiterer at Feilding for four years. As his wife became ill he took her home, leaving his cousin in charge of his business. During his absence the Palmerston firm in question entered and took possession of all his stock, including even the money in the till. Prior to leaving he had told the firm’s representative that he would bo absent for a time owing to his wife’s illness, that the cousin would be in charge, and that he (the debtor) would square up on his return. He attributed his bankruptcy to the action of the Palmerston firm. On the motion of Mr Elliott (Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowing Company) it was resolved that the Deputy Official Assignee consult the Crown Prosecutor as to whether an action would lie against" the Palmerston firm in respect to the, seizure and conversion of the goods, also for a statement of accounts. : It was further agreed that the debtor bo recommended for immediate discharge.'' 1 ' 1 '■ . . ■“ ****** ~.-r ■mri mm«—m..- m mrrr •
