Four more French boxers—Tiiltier, Balzac, Audony, and Berstein —have arrived under engagement to Mr. H. Mclntosh. FOOTBALL. THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. Wellington, October 2. At a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Football Association, Mr H. McKoovvn presided. An application from the Westland Association for affiliation to the New Zealand Council was granted. A letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay Association, stating that Poverty Bay were anxious tnat Hawke’s Bay should send a hoys’ team to Gisborne, but as the Iqcai Association’s funds did not permit of tjiis they asked the Council to assist them. The secretary stated that lie had replied that the Council had no funds to spare to assist the Hawke’s Bay Association, and his action was confirmed. The Football Association, London, wrote that ,at the present time they wore unable to entertain New Zealand’s request that an English team should tour the Australasian colonies. The Otago Association wrote that they would allow their challenge for the Brown Shield to stand over till next season. Letters were received from the chairman and secretary of the Taranaki Association regarding the controversy among, the officials ol that body, but the Council decided to take ho action. CRICKET. AUSTRALIA v. NEW YORK. New York, October 2. The Australians have commenced a two days’ match against New York. Australia, in their first innings, scored 157, and in the second 10 for no wickets.
