ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
THE INVERCARGILL TRAM ACCIDENT. (Per Press Association.* Invercargill, September 30. The inquest on Frederick Smith, victim of the tramway fatality on Saturday, September 21, was concluded to-day. The evidence showed that the deceased tried to board a moving l train on the pole side, and was knocked under the car by coming in contact with a pole. The Coroner’s enquiry was principally directed towards ascertaining the length of time deceased was pinned down by the car before being released by the car being lifted with jacks. The evidence on this point was exceedingly contradictory, the estimates varying from ten to thirty minutes. The Coroner (Mr. Cruickshank, SAL) returned a verdict of accidental death, and intimated that Inter he would add a rider dealing with the circumstances of the ac-j cidont and the subsequent proceedings. A CONSTABLE'S DEATH. Invercargill, September 30. Constable Patrick .loycc, stationed for many years at Otantau. died on Sunday afternoon from heart failure. DEATH FROM SUFFOCATION. Auckland. September 30. Robert Muir Thompson, 3 years eld. a son of Mr. T. M. Thompson, of Wainkn. was killed by. a gate falling on him last week. At the inquest a verdict of death from suffocation was returned.
