City, men believe it will help to restore British prestige, in the Far East. The Foreign Office verbally informed the firm that it was unable to prevent the issue, but it would not recognise their action. Financial papers favour China’s action. The Stock Exchange at the outset opposed it, until it found the security was identical with that offered to the six Powers. The Daily News and the Chronicle denounce the action of the Powers. The former likens them to a bloodsucking money-lender, and is sorry Britain is talcing the lead in an undefying business.
