RATE EXPENDITURE.

(To the Editor "Stratford Post."; I Sir,—l understand that at the Inst meeting of the Whangamomona County Council the proposal that the Taliora Riding should contribute towards the up-keep of the Main Road in the Central Riding, received its quietus. 1 don't know exactly the amount of money it was proposed that Tunora should pay. The amount, in any < aso, probably wouldn't have ruined Tahora, 1 i>ut there was a principle involved whether rates should be expended cutside of the Riding in which they \yvi\" struck. The legal opinion taken on tin's question, I believe, was to tne effect that rates struck in a Riding have to be expended in that Riding, and that is exactly what the Tahora representatives have been fighting for all-along. Once allow rates struck in a Riding to be expended in another part of the County and you estblish a precedent which will ultimately lead to an undesirable state of affairs. In connection with this affair, Cr. McCutchan once said that the matter would have to be rectified "and in the process Tahora would receive no wrong but a full measure of what is just." Those prophetic words have come true, and Tahora has received "no wrong but a frill measure of what is just," and that is all it wanted in the first place. Unless Cr. McCutchan breaks out in a fresh place, this scheme is now dead after a two years' struggle for life. A Tahora ratepayer suggests the follows epitaph:—"Sacred to the memory of . Cr. McCutchan's Pet Scheme, born November, 1910; killed by Cr. Robert on at a meeting of the Whang* County Council, August, 1912."—1 am, etc., SKELLY.
