THE STAR OF CANADA
Gisborne, September 20,
The Star of Canada now lies abandoned and alone on the rocks. Practically everything moveable has been brought ashore. Possibly further salvage work will be undertaken on the hull as the salvage gang left one winch (useless without imported steam) and a,derrick on board. The Star of Canada case in the Supreme Court is likely to last until Tuesday.
BOY’S ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, Wellington, September 20
An extraordinary case came before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., to-day. An eleven-year-old boy pleaded guilty to a charge of'having attempted to commit suicide on September 15th. On the date mentioned the boy took umbrage at being corrected by his mother for a misdemeanour at the dinner table. Shortly afterwards he was found practically unconscious, hanging in an outhouse. Standing on a box, he had. tied a rope to a rafter, adjusted the noose to his neck, and then kicked the box from under him. A considerable time elapsed before he was out of danger. The Magistrate cautioned the lad and discharged him.

Sir Robert Stout has given notice of the following motion for next meeting of tlnj Victoria College Council: — “That, considering the grave reflections cast on the professors and students of Victoria College in the following statement, recently made by Professor Picken, viz., (a) that a university professor is a man whose value to the community should consist in his personality, his individuality of outlook, and his originality of thought, but that such qualities would chiefly serve to make life a burden to men whom we call ‘professors’ in New Zealand (so that there is a consolation for someone in the thought that the conditions have minimised the danger of men with those qualities being imported)-; (b) so far from the work being done; for which the university '‘the great majority of the students left the colleges less sound in body,- and mind and soul, than on the day they entered,, except for the salutary influence of their personal contact with one another, this council appoints a;, committee to investigate such charges and- report to the council thereon.’’ 1 • DAIRYING. Invercargill, Septeml>er 20. The committee appointed by . the Soxith Island Dairy Association met the Southland and Otago Dairy Factory Managers’ Union to-day, and
came to an agreement on all points in dispute, except salaries, which will be further discussed at a meeting next week. The hours of labour are not to exceed 93 per week, and one month’s holiday is allowed. Preference is given to unionists, provided that neither party federates with any other body. The agreement is to come into effect on September Ist, 1913.
A NEW INDUSTRY
Napier, September 21
A new industry, and one of importance to the whole of the Dominion, has just been established in Napier, the Acetone Welding Company having installed a plant for the manufacture of liquid air and nitrous oxide. The company lias been working on a small scale' for some time in the manufacture of dissolved acetylene, which has revolutionised the welding industry. Already the monthly output amounts to 1.) tons of gas for all parts of the Dominion. At present all nitrous oxide used in the Dominion is imported.
BODY FOUND f IN RIVER. Gisborne, September 21. The body of an elderly man named Kenneth Matthews, alias Her the son, was found in the Manganui river this morning. The man •-has been dead some days.
WHANG,AREI COUNTY FINANCE, Whangarei, September 21.
Owing to the very unsatisfactory state of the county finances and the manner in which affairs have been conducted, two councillors have sent in their resignations while another has signified his intention of doing the same. Arrangements have not yet been made for the finances of three months’ contingent expenses. APPEALIiISMISSED, The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) dismissed the appeal of Scott v. Martindale for publishing a double-betting chart. The question, at issue was whether it had been published.
