THE EGMONT ELECTION.

Mr C. A. Wilkinson is to be heartijy congratulated on his handsome majority in the bye-election yesterday. 'While his outstanding fitness for the position of Egmont's representative in Parliament i.s generally acknowledged, independent onlookers at the game ri partv politics must feel that puhlic opinion still grows in favour of the Government, and the victory must be to an extent credited as a Government victory. That Mr Wilkinson has gained bis seat we are glad, no matter what Party he supports, because we believe he will be a useful man to the country and that he will bo no more Partv hack or blind follower oi any Government. Egmonfc has done wisely in electing a strong man as j member for the District.
