A well-dressed man, claiming to be an insurance inspector, was allowed by a suburban postmaster to inspect the rear premises of the office. Going out later the postmaster discovered his visitor sketching the rear premises of the Commercial Bank branch next door. The visitor mumbled an excuse and decamped. The police believe that his description tallies with that of a supposed safe-breaker operating in the city. ' Sydney, September 13. Professor Halswell disagrees with Professor Schaefer's opinion on the origin of life. He states that as far as experience extends, a living thing originates only from a living thing. We know nothing about the physical and chemical agencies whereby the most essential processes of life are carried on. They are totally unlike : anything operating in the sphere of nonliving matter.
