o THE LADIES’ TOURNAMENT.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, September 11
The New Zealand ladies’ hockey tour nament was continued to-day in fine weather, the matches being played at St. Albans Park. The grounds, however, were not as good as those at Sydenham Park, the grass being muck too long in places. The attendance of spectators was again good. The matches for to-day resulted: — B SECTION. Canterbury A 4, v. Duller 0. Auckland 2, v. Wellington 2. Wanganui 4, v. West Coast 1. A SECTION. Canterbury B 2, v. Taranaki nil. Wairarapa 1, v. Nelson 0. Poverty Bay 2, v. Manawatu 1. The Canterbury A match resulted in a win for the former by 4 goals to nil. Tli© play of the Canterbury team was much superior to that shown by them on the previous day, due largely, no doubt, to the fact that they were meeting a weaker team. The Duller girls were weak in tackling and in marking, and their stick work was not too good, the long grass troubling them.
The Canterbury B-Taranalci match was a very even contest, and seemed likely to result in a draw. Taranak were the faster team, but Canterbury B were superior in passing and placing. Their circle work, however, war anything but good, quite a number of chances to score being missed. They wore lucky towards the latter part of the second spell, in scoring two goals.
The Auckla nd-Welli ngt on match provided an interesting contest. Auckland missed chances on several occasion: through the wings keeping the ball too long before centring. Prominent players for the winners were Miss Oooko and Miss Wylie, and for the loners Miss McDonnell and Miss Harris. The game between Wairarapa and Nelson was disappointing. W airarapa attacked consistently, and frequently reached the goal. Wanganui got the better of West Coast by 4 to 1. The game was a fast and interesting one. The forward •vork of both teams was usually good. Miss Ivy Perritt (Wanganui) showed herself particularly good, both at dribbling and driving. One of the players, Miss Kirkoski, got hurt, but rccoovered sufficiently to continue with the game.
Manawatu put up a .good fight against Poverty Bay, whihc, however, was the faster and more powerful team, though the game was full of movement and incident. The result ing score was only 2to 1. There were numerous rushes up and down the field, and the Poverty Bay team showed that it had good runners among its members, while Manawatu, though its tactics were perhaps less brilliant, shone at defensive work. Goals were scored by Misses Fairlie and Pearce for Poverty Bay, and by Miss W. Hod dor for* Manawatu.
The championship points to date are as follows:—A section: Wairarapa 3, Canterbury B 2J, Otago 2, Poverty Bay 2, Nelson U, Manawatu Taranaki 4.
B Section: Hawke’s Bay 3, Wellington. 2i, Canterbury 'A 2*, Wanganui 2.J, West Coast 0, Buller 0-
