TGKUNGAJSM. o CONVICTION AND HEAVY FINE. (Per Press Association.) Wairoa, September 6. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day the case of tohungaism arising out of the death of the native Wiri Kupa at Mohaka some time ago was investigated by Mr Barton, S.M. Wh are 1 aha was charged under the Tohunga Suppression Act with certain unlawful practices. The case was conducted by Detective Kemp, of Napier, and resulted in a conviction and a line and expenses totalling £33 9s 6d. It was proved accused treated several persons besides Mohaka and Wairoa, for devils in sick persons, and whom he so terrified that they feared to call in a doctor. He suggested that seme of the women were wasting their lives on old men, and made overtures to them on his own account.

Accused, in defence, denied treating the patients or charging them, but only prayed to God for them.

Mr Barton characterised accused as a gigantic fraud and low blackguard, and expressed the hope that this case would be a warning to Maori people not to consult such utter frauds.

LIQUOR OK MO LIQUOR.

THE TRADE’S REQUEST. (Per Press Association.) , Wellington, September 6. A deputation representing . the National Council of the Liquor Trade waited on Mr Massey (Prime Minister) this morning, asking for an amendment of the voting paper in regard to national prohibition in order that an honest expression of opinion might be obtained at the polls. They asked that the two issues should be -altered to read: “I vote for national continuance,” and ”1 vote for national piohibition.”

Mr Massey, in reply, said ho did not think the Government could do anything in the matter this session. The position would be made quite clear 1 shore another poll was taken.

OUTCOME OF TAUPIRI CHALLENGE.

(Per Press Association.) Hamilton, September 6. Kenneth Moore, who was yesterday acquitted of the charge of manslaughter of a Maori at Taupm, while taking part in a prize light, appeared before Mr. Justice Cooper to-day. Ho was charged with taking part in a prize light, and pleaded guilty. Justice Cooper explained the difference between boxing and prize fighting. I lie latter was definitely illegal, and teat at Taupiri was of such a nature that he did .not want it to bo understood that matches with gloves were necessarily illegal. If they_ were really prize fights they came within the law, too, but where no such element was present, they were not a breach of the Jaw. Dunedin, September G. , Robert Turner was charged this morning at the Police Court with having murdered his son, Percy John T urner. Accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial.
