Existing collapsibles must be replac 'd hy lifehots. The rule decreasing the boat accommodation where efficient watertight compartments are provided is abrogated, while steps are to be taken to secure efficient boat-hands. A TUBE FATALITY. London, September u. Two express trains collided at the Caledonian road station, in the Picadilly tube. Eighteen people were injured. This is the first tube collision in England.
HEATH IN THE AIR. Budapest, September 5. During the artillery manoeuvres, a sudden gust tore an airship from the grasp of a hundred gunnel's. Three were carried up four hundred feet, and when exhausted fell and were killed. ITALIAN TRAM CONDUCTOR KILLED. Rome, September 5. A tram conductor at Genoa followed three men who failed to pay their fares. One of the latter shot the conductor dead. The police pursued the men, and forty revolver shots were exchanged, one of the fugitives being killed, whilst two policemen and five others were wounded. The remaining murderers were arrested, and the crowd attempted to lynch them. AMERICAN STEEL. (Received 9.20 a.m.) London, September 5. The Manchester Citj Council, by an overwhelming majority, placed a contract for steel rails with an American company, whose tender was £10,231,as compared with a Sheffield tender of £21,088. THE SUGAR CONVENTION. (Received 9.20 a.m.) London, September 3. In notifying their withdrawal from the Sugar Convention, Sir Edwarl Grey intimated that Britain did not intend to give bounties or preference for sugar or to impose a higher duty on beet than on cane sugar. A SCHOONER ASHORE. ON THE REEF AT NUKUALOFA. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, September 6. The schooner Elf ride, ~ownecl'*Jry D. H. P. G. Company and recently overhauled at Auckland at a cost of about £IBOO, went on the reef at Nukualofa at night about a fortnight ago. She humped over several reefs and sank in the lagoon. The crew got asaore safely. The schooner subsequently was got ashore in a battered condition.
