Accused was not represented by counsel. On the application of the police, abused was iormally remanded until toepte.aoer ID, and it is stated that a lurtnei remand to September lb mil bo applied for. Hail was allowed accused in one surety yi i;2UU, and one surety of £4OO. _ [Dr. Charles James ilusseli, who is a West Indian by birta, and now do years of age, turn been practising in Christchurch for some years. Many years ago no was convicted of a sni.u a offence to the one ho is now charged with, and served a sentence of some years’ imprisonment in Lyttelton gaol. On his release ho resumed practice in Christchurch, and although not recognised by the regular.faculty, no baa lived down Ids original offence and nad built up a large and lucrative practice. lie studied medicine at Anderson’s University, Glasgow, gaining the degrees of U.P.S. and L.S.A., in 1869. He took his diploma at Syracuse University, Now fork, in 1876. In Christchurch he was prominent in quasi-public life, taking particular interest in social and educational matters. At present ho is a mourner of the Education Board of North Canterbury. He held a prominent place on the" School Committees’ Association, and was an active member of the Society for the Prevention cf Cruelty to Animals and the Horticultural Society, and a great number of other organisations.]
