A message was received by the police this afternoon stating that Daniel McCarten, a well-known resident of Matapu, had been found dead in his' house. Deceased, who was about 50 years of age, attended the horse fair at Hawera yesterday, when he appeared to he in his usual health. Subsequent inquiries show tlbat deceased had an epileptic fit. lA Christchurch deputation from the Canterbury Automobile Association waited on tlhe Minister of Marine with a request that he would use lids influence with the Union Company to secure a reduction of the freight rates on motors privately owned between Lyttelton and Wellington.
