FARMERS’ UNION.
TOKO BRANCH MEETING. (From a correspondent.) Tho usual monthly meeting of the Toko Farmers’ Union was held on Monday night, there being a good attendance of members. Tho results of the root-growing competitions were then made known. Those competitions have excited much interest as Mr. 0. Bayly has given a handsome silver challenge cup for the best three acres of swedes and Mr. Newton King gave a silver rose bowl for the best half acre of mangels, each to be won either twice in succession or three times at intervals before becoming the property of any conmpetitor. Mr. W. H. Were was first for turnips with a weight per acre of 45 tons I ewt. he using Garten’s Superlative Seed and the following manure per acre 1 ewt. bone dust, 1 ewt. basic slag, 1 ewt. superphosphate, and ewt. sulphate of potash. Mr. C. Bayly was second with a weight of 40 tons' 3 ewt. per acre—Garten’s Superlative Seed. 1.1 ewt bonedust and 1 \ ewt. superphosphate per acre. Mr. Marfell was third with 39 tons per acre—same seed, 2 ewt, slag per acre. Mr. We res turnips were drilled in on Decmeber 15th. and Mr. Bayly’s on December Ist.
■f Mr. Marfellf,was first for mangels with a weight of 44 tons 2 cwts, per acre. Mr. ' Were being second with a weight of 36 tons 1 ewt. Great credit is due to the judges Messrs Walter and Lucena for the time they devoted to thejudging and for the very fair* and capable way in which they carried out their duties. It is rumoured that Mr. Were since winning this competition has to wear a size larger in hats but 1 cannot answer for the accuracy of this.
