Following is-the High Commissioner's cable, dated London, May 24th (quotations unless otherwise specified are average market prices on spot):— General. —The markets are paralysed on account of the strike transport workers. Prices are rising for anything available. Ships cannot discharge. Quotations arc nominal. _ Mutton. —Canterbury 4 Id, Norta Island 4,' ( d. Lamb.—Canterbury /d, otner than Canterbury Gkl. 1 Beef.—New Zealand fores 4d, hinds 43d. Butter. —New Zealand choices,!/ IR>B Cheese. —The average price for the week for finest N.Z. is: White Tbs Gd, coloured 74s 6d. Hemp.—There is no change in prices—namely, spot N.Z. good fair 1521 15s, fair £2O 10s, fair current Manila £22; forward shipments N.Z. good fair £2l os, fair £2O 10s,, fan current Manila £22 10s. Matthews, Bennett and Cc.’s Report Messrs. Matthews, Bennett and Go reports that there was a fair yarding of cattle in their Inglewood yards on Wednesday last, prices wore about the same. We quote: Calves £1 to 255, good do. 2Gs to 365, store cows £2 to £3 ss, empty heifers £3 10s, incalf heifers £3 10s to £4. os, bulls £2 to £3 7a Gd, f.f.m. ewes 7s. Ax the Mart on Saturday last weaner pigs brought os to Bs. WHEAT AND TALLOW. Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., and Reduced, have received the following cablegram from their London house, under date 22nd instant;— Wheat. —We have sold an Australian cargo at 39s 9d, c.i.f. The buyers are holding off, and there is very little demand. The outlook is discouraging. We quote, per quarter c.i.f., New Zealand wheaL longberried 37s Gd. shortberried 375. Tallow.—We quote present spot values for the following descriptions: Good mutton 35s 9cl per cwt., good beef 34s 9d, mixed 32s 3(1. The market is firm.
