DISAPPOINTED BURGLARS. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, May 24. An unsuccessful attempt was made last night to break open the safe in the premises of the Waitemata .Fruitgrowers' Association in Fort Street by the use of explosives. The constable on duty heard a report and saw smoke issuing from an upper window. The police searched tino building but there was no trace of the burglars. Presumably they had loft awaiting the burning of the fuse which was evidently used to fire the explosive. The safe was only slightly damaged. A STIFF SENTENCE. Auckland, May 21. At the Supreme Court George Judge, who indecently assaulted a girl of eight years at Cambridge, was sentenced to seven years' hard labour. BURGLARS AT ELTHAM. Eltham, .May 24. Burglars entered the cycle shop and sporting requisites (lapot ol .Mi' Ira. ,). Bridger, Bridge Street, during the nigbt and stole six doutae-barrellecl sporting rifles, two revolver.-, a set ol boxing gloves and a quantity of ammunition of a.total value of £SO. They left no trace. The premises were securely locked on the previous night. It i,-, presumed that the front door was opened with a skeleton key and then closed. The back door, which had been bolted from the inside, being found open.
