UNABATED PATRIOTISM
(Received 22. 9,20 a.m.) London, Mav
Mr. Morris, Premier of Newfoundland, interviewd in London, salt! hundreds of sailors had been trained since Newfoundland's naval reserve was established. The protection of life and prosperity depended on the navy, m o, therefore, Newfoundland was prepared to make further sacrifices, as once the navy stopped the Empire stopped.
NEW ZEALAND’S SPIRIT
{Received 22, 9.20 a.m.)' London, Mav 21
The “Pall Mall Gazette” says the Imperial response grows and widens. The battle cruiser New Zealand was the first fruit of the Imperial awakening in 1909, and,New Zealand’s answer to the renewed challenge in 1912 Is
sufficiently plain; hut the Imperial Government must not use New Zealand’s spirit as an excuse For cheeseparing at home.
A USTR ALI AN COMMENT.
(Received 22, 10.15 a.rn.) Sydney, Mav 22
The “Telegraph,” in a leader, says New Zealand’s action undoubtedly stregfchens the naval defence in the North Sea. It is important to the extent that New Zealand does not lose much in the matter oi defensive security. W}iat is admirable is the gain the fleet unexpectedly makes. New Zealand had taken the right course,; firstly in associating'in a naval scheme with the navy instead of putting into form a separate unit as the Commonwealth had donq, and again it had done .ivbatj. under the circumstances, wafc| the best—placing a ship at the Imperial Government’s disposal. The effect on Australia forms interesting conjecture-.’ fUfideirDMlß Churchill’s pRU irV the withdrawal of j ship seems to Teiiyo tbo ConiPiionyf'qalth guardipn ( ;ol Australasia. Whatever may he thought of Australia’s policy, our national duty is now to make .the very best of it.
