NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. iPor Press Association.! Wellington, May 11. The management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met tonight. An appeal for a contribution towards a fund for the purchase ol pictures for a national art gallery was referred to the annual meeting. Tin Wellington Rugby Union wrote asking that as the amount of £4OO had been half paid off the committee should consider the question of reducing the rate of interest from 3 per cent, to
2) per cent. The amount outstandin is £195. The matter was referred 1 the incoming committee. The di
qualification of twelve months imposed on T. Rapson, by the Wellington Rugby Union, was made general. An application by E. R. Watkins for reinstatement was declined. The Pover - ty Bay Association wrote urging the reinstatement of players in that district as a check to the growth of the Northern League game. It was well known, said the letter, that football in Hawke’s Bay last season was a fiasco,o wing to the strides made by the league game. It was 'reasonable to assume that a number of smaller unions had already been approached, with perhaps a prospect of an early representative match and a return game to induce them. The letter was referred to the annual meeting. A JUMPING RECORD. Brisbane, May 14. At Toowoomba sports, L. Glover, in six standing broad jumps, covered 08ft. OJin., and in three jumps HII t. 4Jin., establishing -Australasian records. LAWN TENNIS. Wellington, May 11. The management committee of the Now Zealand Lawn Tennis Association met last night, Mr F. M. ■ Fisher presiding. The Hawke’s Bay Association forwarded a copy of a letter from the Hastings Chib asking for information as to the 1912 New Zealand championships, proposed to be Jpdd in Hawke’s Bay. The letter was referred to a sub-committee consisting of the chairman and Mr Hurley. Toe quarterly meeting of the council lias been called for Thursday, May 30. The committee decided to adopt the Ayres championship ball for the 1912 New Zealand championships, subject to satisfactory arrangements being made
as to placing indent orders. The Australasian Association advised that the Buckley Cup competition would be hold in Sydney, on August 3rd and sth, and that negotiations were still being carried on with the object of securing a tour of Australasia by an English team. Melbourne has been selected as the place to be suggested to the challenging nations for playing the challenge rounds of the Davis Cup of 1912.
